Do you like working in Communications?

20Years Communications Book Kevin PopovicIt’s not a job, it’s an adventure. Okay, so it’s also a job. Still, we were amazed to discover that no matter how jaded it’s possible to become over two decades of immersion in this industry that most of us still like it. Love it even. Admit to it even. And wouldn’t trade the last 20 years for anything in the world – for the most part.

Jack Wolf and Rob Deaner summarized my experiences and feelings perfectly in this video. Wolf mentions that he feels as though he has never actually worked, and I echo this sentiment. Writing articles, connecting with professionals, and interviewing musicians, actors, and artists that I respect is not work. That’s fun. I never want to know the dreadful feeling of hating my job, and, so far, I have not felt that with journalism.

Deaner, on the other hand, mentioned the satisfaction as a musician with creating something out of nothing. Playing guitar is my favorite hobby, and I certainly see similarities between creating a catchy riff or melody and writing an article that properly expresses and satisfies your mission. There is no feeling quite like it, and I think Deaner drove that point home expertly.
